Little Big Things: Baby Needs

Little Javier is halfway on its journey to see the world. Just like preparing for a wedding and moving to a new house, baby preps are just as exciting. I’ve been doing my research lately and my husband and I never get tired of window shopping for baby needs.

Here are my top picks that I can’t wait to get for my little one:

1. Breast Pumps

Breast milk is still best for babies. Being the eldest, I’ve learned how to feed my siblings while they were young except of course, breast milking them. As far as I can remember, they were (or we were) Promil kids and I was very used to mixing the formula powdered milk and water. But nowadays, breast feeding is very well-promoted. Even hospitals do not allow formula milks for new-born babies.

I’m setting aside an amount to invest for breast pumps (and the accessories). After all, you’ll be saving a lot for formula milks. Planning to get myself a manual pump first – just to check and then later on, get an electric one. I’m a working mom so I need to get as much milk as I can during my breaks but still able to catch up my emails and attend meetings as well.

2. Breast Milking Accessories

Buying a pump doesn’t end there. Moms need to buy the accessories that working moms like me that will help sustain the milk after pumping it to bringing it home. Ice packs, milk storage bottles, plastic milk storage kits and a sharpie (yeah, it needs to be sharpie because I just love sharpies!) plus a good carrier are the least things that I may need.

3. Nursing Covers

Of course we do not want to get stuck at home and nursing covers will help breast feed our babies when we need to in public (or in pumping stations). This too will help during my pumping in the office that I am very excited to experience.

4. Baby Carrier

There are lots of baby carriers out there that suit more for dads. I still plan to get those traditional baby carriers especially when this kid grows bigger but for new born, I’ve been eyeing those cloth baby carriers.

5. Cloth Diapers

I’m not really sure how much money, time and effort will I be able to save for this. I’m really concerned about the washing and when we go out for hospital visits, malls, and long vacations. Reviews say they will save you money in the long run but how much effort will I need to exert to sustain this? But the best thing about cloth diapers is it’s saving our mother earth plus their super cute designs.

Anything to share moms? I’m not an expert here. I still need to do a lot of research and still have more to get for this little Javier. I’ll post reviews on the brands I use after I give birth. Enjoy mommy preps!

First Plane Ride

Do you remember the first time you rode the plane? Nowadays, it’s very easy for kids to experience their first plane ride as fares are cheaper. Thanks to budget airlines that once had a vision that every person can ride a plane once in their lives. I took my first plane ride when I was 5 years old. Lucky to experience that young, I was with my mom and my sister when all of us rode the plane for the first time to travel. I had no idea what was this travel is all about, even did not have any knowledge where we’re going. All I knew was that, we’re riding the plane and we were going somewhere far where my dad studied his Master’s degree. Not all kids, during that time, had that chance. And definitely, not all kids had the chance to travel to Europe so I am most thankful to my lola (who’s in US) who gave us this opportunity. Here’s my picture back then. We had a stopover in Hongkong Airport and this innocent kid asked her mom why we were getting down the plane. My mom answered...

For Parents with Newborn: How to Get More Sleep

Not an expert on this one but I just want to share how we managed Sofia's sleep at night. When people ask me if I'm getting enough sleep since Sofia came, they are always surprised to hear that I get enough sleep ever since. Of course the first few weeks were zombie sleeping but it was just because I need to feed my daughter every 2 hours to stimulate my milk. But Sofia did not really (and is not) give us a hard time to get enough sleep.  I've heard some moms whose babies were wide awake and would play in the middle of the night. My daughter never did that. She'd only wake up and cry because of normal stuff like colic, too hot or too cold room temperature, wet diaper or simply wanted to be fed but not at all, because she wanted to play. So for moms with newborns coming, here are my tips. Some I got from a pediatrician. 1. Breastfeed and co-sleep. Of course, so to minimize the need to move. The first two and a half months, co-sleeping and breastfeeding did...

Little Big Thing of the Day: Thermos Cafe

We all know how hot these days have been and our only armor will be water to keep us hydrated. Lately, I have been waking up my husband in the middle of our sleep to get me a glass of water and to turn on our aircon and this has been a habit. My husband’s fat brain (in other words, matabang utak) thought of this brilliant idea to bring a good amount of water upstairs in our room and put the remote of our aircon beside us. To keep the water cold, (I’m sure this preggo doesn’t want to drink warm water when she’s dehydrated) Lester puts out his Thermo Cafe drinking bottle. Don’t get the title wrong, this thermos retains the temperatures of both hot and cold water. For us, we sleep at least six hours and the water is still cold when you wake up even until the afternoon. A good buy, my husband bought this for only a few hundred bucks in New Zealand around three years ago and still works wonders! I think this cost more than a thousand here in Manila but still it’s worth the price....
